I just purchased the correct head for the jeep but wanted to figure out what this might have come from CJ or Military? Thank you!

I believe Larker is refeering to the head pictured in his album:

Looks like a CJ2A or early 3A head.

The head from a M38's engine will have the additional coolant outlet on the front left corner. A civilian head does not. Easy to spot.

The M38 head casting # Came with or without the 1/4" P tapped hole. Both versions had the raised boss but the M38 version had the hole drilled and tapped.

Late WWII head & early CJ on right has no raised boss. Early CJ from about 47 to 51 used this 640161 casting civvy head on right has the raised boss but no drilled hole.

The 800376 head casting used from about 50 on up in CJ's and M38's had the boss on both versions but only the M38 had the drilled and tapped hole in that boss.

M38 version of the 800376 casting.

There is one more head casting for the L134 casting # 9XXXXX and it also has the boss which is drilled for engines with the bypass pump connection.
