I have a 1953 m38a1 i am putting the finishing touches on as a neighborhood regular driver.
I have the original voltage regulator that seems to be working fine and i have an NOS solid state voltage regulator that has never been used.
I have it sitting on the shelf doing nothing ,does anyone have any opinions as to which i should be using as i intend to keep the jeep for a very long time.
Any reason that i should mothball the original delco-remy or should i just run it till it gives me problems?
All opinions are welcome.

The mechanical regulator is repairable and adjustable and can give many, many hours of trouble-free service - if it is working, I'd use it as it would have been the original type installed. The electronic type is not repairable or adjustable, when it fails, for whatever reason an electronic device fails, its a throw away part. I'd install the electronic regulator to make sure it is operational and then store it in a clean, dry, not to hot or cold place as an emergency replacement part.

I use an original on my M38A1 and have had no problems. If you change to the solid-state type regulator you will have to have a voltmeter type gauge rather than the ammeter type that was original to the vehicles.

Skyjeep and allan
Both good points Ill think ill store the solid state one and keep on trucking
Alan ,the stencils came out great and the jeep is about finished.
Im waiting on some last parts (namely the timing pointer) and ill have her tuned up and purring.
She already sounds good( the carb overhaul made a huge difference) but i think i can get her closer to perfect.
Im still using those pictures of your jeep i took in florala mostly for hose and wire routing.was just consulting them last night as to where the spark plug wire holder go .
Hopefully ill see you at our next rally.
Come by the hangar any time.
By the way, we just got a gulfstream four......nice ride
