Wes,
On your photos page with the early M38 firewall..
There is a hole between holes 10 and 11 that has a grommet
with a very small hole in it. It is not marked on your photo.
Is this for the temperature sender wire?
Thanks,
Brian

That hole was not originally grommeted, It is for the vacuum line support clamp.

I have a very old, very groty grommet in there that matches
what's left of the other grommets. The hole diameter makes
sense for a vacuum line.
Tks,
Brian

Any idea what they put in that grommet? Without the grommet
that's a big hole for a clamp screw.

Someone has elarged your hole. Look in your TM9-8012 Page132, Fig 37 and TM 9-1804A page 29, Fig 33. Also this is illustrated again in TM 9-1804B page 37 Fig 12 which shows the later M38 using a double clamp at that hole. Early M38's only have the fuel tank vent line clamped to that hole. Later M38's had the short tube from the air cleaner to the firewall mounted "T" clamped there also. One above the hole and one below the hole using a single bolt.
