Fuel Level Sending Unit Connection

I have run into a little bit of a problem while preparing my fuel level sending unit and was hoping that others might have some ideas.
For those who may want to take a look, there is a more detailed process over on my project page.

The new unit came with a Packard setup and I set out to convert it to Douglas.

The first setup looked like this. Thankfully, Wes very aptly pointed out that this setup would effectively ground the pin to the housing.

So I set out trying to find another variant of this setup, adding a rubber insulator to fix the problem. Unfortunately I found that no matter how I arranged it I kept running in to a couple of problems with this method:
A) that the pin isn't secured to the housing and will push into the housing when you try to put on the rubber piece and
B) even when this setup is installed, it doesn't leave enough of the pin exposed to connect the connector.

Which has brought me back to....

The original setup. Thanks to the folks over at Vintage Wiring of Maine who leave the harness end open to adaptation while including the parts. I am now wondering about making this one connection into a Packard style.

Thoughts? Has anyone come across this before?

Changing that one wire to Packard is the easiest answer.

Thanks Brian,
Does anyone know where it's possible to locate a single female Packard connection? The outside diameter of the rubber I have is about .7". When I search for Packard connectors on google I find a whole host of information mostly pertaining to more modern multi pin connectors found on modern vehicles but not much on the single pins.

For this one will the regular Douglas pin connector seen in the picture from my old connector work?

Also, while I think of it, is it easy to locate some new pin connectors (Douglas)? While I still have my old harness, I figure I'll need some when installing the new harness.

Hawk,
You want a female pin, male Packard plug correct?

I have one in my connector box. I will need more than one
before I'm done so you can have this one. I can email a pic
if you like.

Pay the shipping and it's yours.

Saturn Surplus sells Douglas as well as Packard connectors
as a set. One set is a complete end, either male or female.

I am sure they sell more than what is on their website.
You might call and see if they sell individual bits.

EBay is another place to buy connectors. Most are takeoffs
and can be iffy on condition.
