The upper casing is a takeout from my M38, the metal tag is #738J387 and is 58-1/4" long.
The lower casing was a NOS cable from MWM, the metal tag is #7320561 and is 63-1/4" long.
Both casings are branded Stewart Warner.

There is clearly a 5" difference between the 2 casings. I understand that there was a change at vehicle SN 44029 according to ORD9 2208.1
but the nature of that change is not specd. Could one be M38A1, and one
be M38?? I was not aware there were 2 different lengths.

The 7320561 is actually a tachometer cable from an M35A2 according to the MWM website.

Keith may know the answer to this. The actual cables installed by Willys (early vs late) differed in length by only about 2 1/2".

The Willys speedo cables were:

Thru MC44029:
Inner shaft/core: AC# 1580786, WO# 118117, ORD# 7527483
Outer casing: AC# 1581439, WO# 118116
Entire assy: AC# 1581433, SW# 446125-55, WO# 801093, ORD# 7527480 These were 54.5" overall length.

After MC44029:
Inner shaft/core: AC# 1581351, SW# 41809-57-1-2 WO# 119212, ORD# 7355830
Outer casing: AC# 1581449, SW# 418041 WO# 805130
Entire assy: AC# 1581436, SW# 446125-57-1-2, WO# 805129, ORD# 7389881 These were 56.75" overall length.

With a couple of minor PN changes these last set of parts fit the M38A1/M170

The takeout casing I dimensioned at 58.25" is overall including fittings.
The 56.75" dimension provided by Wes is illustrated on the same casing below.

If that is in fact the same long cable I have then
the M35A2 tach cable assy referenced above by WillysMotors is in fact a suitable replacement should the correct cable not be available.

Yes. I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

Keith,
Any idea why the increase in length at MC44029? This was the same serial the driven speedo gear increased in length.

Wes,

I'll have to send you the documents and have you decipher them. It looks to me that they added 2 more vendors and it may have been an existing part at another vendor for another application just longer.

The BOM for MC doesn't show a change in TC assy, so both use 800174 as a TC assy.

I will research 800174 and see if anything changed...

There was no change to the transfer case. The change was to the longer speedo driven gear and driven gear external sleeve.

As if things weren't confusing enough.

Just to be clear. We are talking about the entire cable assembly including the core, correct?

Otherwise the longer or shorter outer would be problematic with a shorter inner cable.

The parts manual makes it clear which core (inner shaft) is used with which outer casing. Common sense dictates keeping them matched. The short core in the long outer casing results in no engagement in the speedo and/or driven gear by the core. Using the long core in the short outer casing results in not being able to full thread the casing on the speedo or driven gear sheath. Which will also jam the core and it will break when you try to drive it.

As stated in a previous response it's a suitable replacement part.
Available here for only 40 bucks + ship.

The best price I've seen for cable and core complete.

I have in front of me a NOS core for the 56.75" length case and it is in fact
AC 1581351
