I have a rusted out passage side spare tire & corner support and have ordered one from Classic Enterprises. The buffle/stone deflector is fine on that side. My question to everyone is...Did the "drivers side" have a stone deflector? Ryan's book (pg 145 #8) notes the holes for one and I can see the need with the trailer wiring all right there. But did they put one in at factory? It would have been bolted in and not welded OR was that a civvy thing.... Thank you!

Both my '51 M38s had it. No hole or baffle, just a flat plate with 4 squared angled lips. Captive spot welded threads in the 4 holes . John

You mention a stone deflector on the pass side. There should be the spare tire brace with the aprox 4" hole in it and nothing more.

Well its magic or that it turns out.

Just used some heavy angle iron pieces clamped or sandwiching the work then peen the edges over gently and evenly. If you do it soft enough, you don't get any hammer marks.

In answer to your question "do I make or sell them", no, mine were original. It is as Bretto said, just flat sheet metal, and you could make one fairly easy. It's purpose was to keep all the mud and tire spray out of the trailer/tail light wiring. Once you paint it OD, it will look great. OD paint heals all evil! LOL, John

I bought one from MWM a while ago and am just getting around to fitting it up and it won't go by 3/8's to 1/2 inch on the width, at least not without some serious forcing that I'm reluctant to do. I considered deforming the plate by putting a vertical crease/bend down the center of it and then realigning the flanges so the bolt holes line up. I suppose my fender dimension is out of whack for some reason.

I believe that the M38A1 uses one also? Is it identical to the M38? <need to download the M38A1 manuals here>

If they're different sizes maybe I got sent the wrong one by mistake. Before I deform the panel I thought I'd ask if somebody might know for sure outright.

The one in this photo (not my jeep) looks deformed/creased down the middle, so I'm thinking that's just how it's done?

The plate is flat. Before you deform the one you have I think I got measurements for Bretto to build his. Let me check...

Thanks! I jumped the gun on my research too. Just found a related post where G740 confirms the M38 panel isn't the same as the M38A1. I'll measure mine and give him a call to see if maybe I got the wrong one by mistake. I already painted mine so might have to buy another..........stand-by for one M38A1 stone guard for sale.

Either that or my left rear fender is wacked out dimensionally. Hate to try and build a custom size panel and I'm not ready to fix sheet metal around that wheel house just for that, so unless I got sent a M38A1 panel by mistake I might end up doing the vertical crease for the time being. Am attempting motor pool resto and I can see a Soldier making a crease as an expedient solution.

I measured mine. It's 10-7/16's wide by 12-7/8's tall. I'll give MWM a call and find out what I have.
