1944 with rattling sound

Post by mork1944 »

Hello
I have just bougth myself a 1944 Willys. It is a norwegian car with a few mods from the millitary. There is a curtain in front, and a heater mounted underneath the dashboard. Nice and original car.

I am also able to read the name "little willy" that have sometime in the past been written on the panel below the windscreen. It is not a panel restored car, so i would like to belive that the text has been there for some years... The engine is restored sometime ago, but i do not know much about this job.

Well, the downside is that I have a rattling sound in the engine. It appeared suddenly, and the sound follows the revs. The oilpressure is good, and so are the power of the engine. I wonder...could it be a loose valve guide?? The engine was running perfectly before this sound appeared. The car has been parked for some time, so i was very careful when i started using it...but obviously not careful enough...

Any ideas out there?

Try to determine the exact area on or in the engine that the noise is coming from. A mechanic's stethoscope will help a lot. Also I believe your GPW has the external type parking brake shoes and drum. These can develop a very distinct metallic rattle as they wear.

This is the external type parking brake at the rear of this transfer case.

Here's another view of the external parking brake

Another source for a rattle is the front crankshaft pulley when it works loose.
