Tire contact with the vehicle was a secondary consideration of the steering angle setting. Primary consideration was the internal damage to the knuckle universal joint.

The purpose and correction of the TB 9-804-12 was the right tire rub only. This rub probably only happened occasionally on a certain percentage of M38's all of which probably left Willys with the Spicer 30 degree setting. Also the Army only adjusted the left stop to prevent the right tire interference and did nothing to the other stop.

Spicer's reduction of the steering angle in May 53 was clearly for the new style Cardan joint which did not have the flexibility of the Bendix and Rzeppa joints.
