Did the original M38 choke and throttle control cable knobs have the words, CHOKE and THROTTLE stamped in them?

A good question Ken, given that many vendors will try and sell you repro parts and much later production parts as 'period correct nos'. And also that its almost impossible to make anything out in a 60 year old photo in a book.
So heres my 2pen'th worth.

I've seen a lot of MAP M38s that were rebuilt by Jap Ord Com. between early 55 and late 57. Oddly I've haven't yet seen one earlier than that or later. Probably because all these jeeps come from one or two huge batches??? I guess.
These jeeps never had a civvy owner so no Bubba input. Any later fitted spares were also supplied under the MAP scheme at the same time.
'Throttle' is always marked as such and the handles appear to match later M series. The writting is a cream colour.
Choke is always marked choke but the writting (looking very close) is white.
Now I have no way of knowing if these are original or later issue BUT J.O.C. DID NOT waste any money on spares when something could be rebuilt no matter how much effort it took, Korean/Japanese female effort was far cheaper than spares so the economics dictated repair and rebuild and canabilise.
So my guess is ...... yes, they were always marked as such. But thats only a guess based on what I've seen.
I've checked my books and been unable to come up witha referance like,'Pull throttle lever marked "THROTTLE"' but I bet there's one out there.
All the best,
Dave.

We had a similar discussion a while back on one of the boards,

every photo in the manaul for the M38 depicts the throttle cable as having a round pull knob, but the vendor will sell a "T" handle NOS one when asked for the cable.............

There are two definitley rounds knobs in the pic.
My M38 has a crome Tee handle for the throttle. and a black round knob painted OD for the choke. So I was just wanting to know what might be correct if I should decide to replace them.

Thanks for the replies.

I agree with Greg. OD round knob with the appropriate name in white letters

The "T" handle throttle was introduced in the M38A1 and was most likely the only cable stocked by the Army for both jeeps after the mid 50's.

I loaned my A1 manuals to a friend and never saw them again so, I have 1 left Tm9 2320-208-20P dated '66 and it shows a T handle throttle with horizonal lettering.
I also have a N.O.S. T handel throttle assembly labled G740-73-75115 that is verticaly lettered packed 3-56

Ken,
Did you personally open the sealed container? Or was the cable already removed from it's original packaging? That is the original M38 ORD number for the throttle control yet NO photos of the M38 dash in any manual show anything but a round knob. The only "T" handle control shown in any M38 manual is the Fording valve control. Perhaps you can post a photo of the control and it's packaging? The M38A1 ORD lists an entirely different ORD number. I would think money concious supply folks would have used the same control for both jeeps. Length differences would have been very minor.
