Retainer chain

Does anyone know what the type of chain is or what it's called that retains the various items so they don't get lost like the gas cap?

Is this the type of chain you mean?
If so, I believe it's called weldless chain. Your local hardware store will most likely sell it by the foot. Or you can try fleabay. Not sure if it comes in different sizes or configurations though.

Ya that's the chain. Bigbox shops around here don't carry it.

Got mine at TSC (Tractor Supply). I've also seen it in various hardware stores, either brass or brass plated usually.

Yep. From the ORD 9:
CHAIN, weldless, safety, S, thkns 0.018 in
"S" being the abbreviation for steel. The chain pictured in my earlier post is NOS, and was painted green. So, brass would work OK since it gets painted. Inside the fuel cap I suppose was unpainted.

Check your local ACE or Best hardware stores, that is where I got mine... I went with brass as it does not rust...

This looks similar to window sash chains so check out the big box stores too for similar chain. If you really have to I bet a marine supply would have something compatible.

Saw it at Northern Tool today - brass, 1-0 (size, I guess), 15' of it - no price. I took it up front for a price check - $28! I put it back since I didn't need 15' of it anyway.
Any sources for the different clips (seat, shackle pins, top bow wing screw, top bow rods)? I think the shackle, seat, gas cap and radiator cap pins are all the same.
How are the chains attached at the other end? One of the shackle brackets, that still had a chain and pin attached, looked like a rivet driven into a drilled hole. Is it really a tapped hole and a screw? How are the rest of them attached?
I'm not ready to put these chains and pins on mine yet, but it is something that has crossed my mind a couple of times.

The other end is a rivet of sorts called a u drive screw.

I have seen (or used) those somewhere before. Would a Lowe's or Home Depot have these (or maybe Tractor Supply)? I've been playing around with making my own clips - would probably take less time than driving somewhere to buy them, and definately cheaper than buying (and shipping) from one of the MV parts dealers!

Not sure about the M38A1, but the M38 original radiator cap looks like this:
No place to fasten a safety chain.
Couldn't see one in the ORD 9, but I may have missed it.......

I'm not saying mine is original to the M38a1, but the dealer I bought it from said NOS for M38 and M38a1 - there isn't anywhere on top of the radiator to attach the chain though - that's why it's not on there. May not be right for the M38 and a1 - I was in the "Buy anything that the dealer says is NOS for the Jeep" mindset back then. I guess I could find some sort of clamp for the overflow tube - I like the idea of keeping it with the vehicle, as I am prone to lose stuff!
