Hi Guys

Are the M38 Cowl/Dash Supports anything like the one's fitted to the M38a1. Both of mine are rotted out at the bottom, and as such need replacing.

Thanks Guys

By their part numbers they must differ. How much I don't know.

M38A1:

680301 (8393195) Bracket, Support, Assy w/weldnuts (Bat Box to Dash)
(uses 8 5/16" bolts.)
680307 (8677551) Bracket, support w/weldnuts (Bat box to instr. panel inbd)
(uses sevem 5/16" bolts)
680306 (No ORD#) Bracket, support w/weldnuts (Bat box to instr. panel
outbd) (uses seven 5/16" bolts)

M38:

673416 (No ORD#) Bracket, Bat box to dash.
673438 (8677261) Bracket, Hanger, Bat Box (2EA) (Together these two
use eight 5/16" bolts and four 1/4" steel rivets.)
673432 (8673992) Bracket, Support, Bat box to instr. panel assy. (Uses
three 5/16" bolts for bracket to instr panel)

Wes,
I don't understand where the three separate parts go except for the last one.

This is the bit I need on both sides of the vehicle, the flared footplate portion is KAPUT!!!!

It's the item which goes underneath the Glove box area on Wes' Picture, and is secured to the inside of the side body, it has the large lightening hole in it.

Ah,
Yep, those puppies have a nasty habit of gathering up any moisture present and eating away the sheet underneath. If your outside sheet metal is toast, bet that bracket is bad as well.

You see which one he's looking for Wes?

Nick has an M38A1 which has both batteries in the cowl. The hookup is a wee bit different than your M38. My list was provided to let Nic see that the M38 parts differ considerably from the M38A1 parts he is seeking. The photo was ffor Nic to see the difference between his bat box to dash plates and the single plate used on the M37. Better to try not to confuse this post for Nic. If you are curious which of the three parts go where in the M38 you should start a new post.

Nic,
As you can see comparing yours to the M38's single bracket, yours are wider from front to rear.

Wes,
I think he is talking about the weld on vertical brackets that join the cowl
to the side sheet and floor on each side.

That's why I post a photo with my comments. Now would be a good time for Nic to post a photo of what he is after.

Guys

Sorry for the confusion, I did in fact mean the vertical parts that go from the floor to the base of the dashboard, I am away from the Jeep so couldn't take a photograph of the offending items.

The base of the vertical supports are rusted through.... now I know John at Midwest do M38 supports but not M38a1 supports. Do you have any suggestions guys???

Once again sorry for the confusion

Regards

Nic

Hello Nic,
The M38 support stops at the floor. The floor sheet is bent
down and is spot welded to the side sheet as is the support.

If the A1 is made the same way maybe you can just cut out the
bad portion and make a new piece and weld it in.

They are totally different than the M38. Wonder what the
chances are of finding a CJ5 part versus an M38A1?

If 18 gauge it should not be too difficult to cut and bend
to replace just the bad part.

Take a look at Classic Enterprises - CJ5/M38A1

Scroll down to the item"'51-71' Jeep CJ5, M38A1 Cowl Area Reinforcements"
Is this what you're looking for?

They certainly look very similar if not the same, may go with these.

Thanks for all the efforts guys, will be back with the Jeep soon, then I'll get on with some more restoring.
